CHIANG MAI

HISTORY

Chiang Mai sits astride the Ping River and surrounded by the highest mountains in Thailand. The city is about 700 kilometers north of Bangkok.

Chiang Mai means “New City”. It was named so because it became the new capital of “Lanna Kingdom” in year 1294, where Lanna means “a Million Fields”. It was the lively center of the nearby region at the time that attracted trademen, artists and people from all walks of life. But nonetheless, the kingdom was later occupied by the Burmese troop for 200 years, before it was returned to Thailand.

Todays, Chiang Mai, the second largest city of Thailand has become one of the top destinations of the world. It possesses a calm and laid back personality, with friendly atmosphere and vast array of activities to enjoy.
